The career of Muhunguyisoni Theodomire is inextricably linked with the beginning of  Rwanda wood carving. A master of his own kind, Theodomine has carved out his own sculptural style with intention, he creates sculptures that portray people and animals with dynamic textures and richness of material.Theodomire sculpts through a collaborative and sustainable process, his works translate  body language into visual narratives and he has whispered the gospel of sculpting to many Rwandan sculptors. Born of artistic parents in 1958 in Butare ,Theodomire used to watch his father and brother carve wood, he experimented with it and later became committed to it, He had early training at a missionary school in Cyahinda Butare and later joined Nyundo art school where he majored in sculpting, after completing his studies he trained professionally with professor Yohana Ugirashebuja Jean.B from whom he gained experience that helped him participate in an art exhibition in Italy where he emerged the best sculptor to exhibit cultural content, upon his return from Italy Theodomine received a stone carving training  from Burkina Faso professor Caisse. A. Entangled by the war, Theodomine migrated to Congo where he met with Congolese sculptors that inspired and trained him more, he found it essential to return to close contact with the Rwandan custom and the significance of the natural world thus after the political saga he returned to Rwanda. Theodomire portrays these cultural customs and natural world themes in his creations that he makes out of stone and wood. There has never been any doubt about Theodomire’s position as an initiator and source of inspiration, his knowledge of the early days ensures that he remains a powerful example to artists today, among whom he is regarded with affection and respect, being referred to as the father of Rwanda sculpture.
